Gambia Telecommunications Company Ltd (Gamtel), the primary telecommunications operator in Gambia, has entered a strategic partnership with technology giant Huawei. This collaboration aims to modernize and expand the core network backbone of the state-owned company.
This joint effort aligns with the Gambian government's commitment to boost the nation's telecommunications infrastructure, a pivotal step in propelling its digital transformation endeavors. Plans are underway to establish a connection to a second international fiber optic submarine cable. Additionally, there are discussions about augmenting national connectivity through satellite technology in conjunction with partners like Starlink.
This initiative is poised to empower Gamtel to fortify its network, effectively addressing the surging demand for information and communication technology services and coverage. Furthermore, it will enhance the competitive position of both Gamtel and its mobile subsidiary, Gamcel, within the Gambian telecom market, which is experiencing a surge in competition.
As of the latest available data from the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA), Gamcel currently commands a 5% share of the market. Competing entities Africell, QCell, and Comium control approximately 63%, 28%, and 5% of the national mobile subscriber base, respectively.
