M-Pesa Africa inaugurated a shared services operations center (SSOC) in Nairobi, Kenya. The $2 million center will support M-Pesa's operations in Tanzania, DRC, Mozambique, Lesotho, Ghana and future markets where the service will expand.

Safaricom explained that the new operations center will “oversee service operations and technical support, including incident monitoring and resolution, managing platform changes and upgrades, deployment of new features and capacity management, and coordination with technical vendors.”

M-Pesa is increasing efforts to extend the coverage and enhance the accessibility of its services in response to the rising adoption and popularity of mobile financial services in Africa. According to the GSM Association, the number of active mobile money subscribers in Africa grew from 161 million to 184 million between 2020 and 2021. Over the same period, the value of transactions increased from $495 billion to $701.4 billion.

M-Pesa is in the process of shifting to a cloud-based platform, with the goal of achieving a unified operation and a single platform across all its markets, known as "one M-Pesa." As of 2022, M-Pesa had over 51 million users spread across seven African countries, and it is anticipated to expand to Ethiopia in the near future.
