Mobile operator Safaricom Ethiopia announced the upcoming construction of a new data center in Addis Ababa. The company signed a land sub-lease agreement with Industrial Parks Development Corporation (IPDC) to build a new Tier-III quality “telco-cloud data center” in the latter’s ICT Park outside the capital, and is reportedly investing around $60 million into this project.

Telkom, South Africa’s third-largest cellular network provider, has termed the government’s proposed move to switch off 3G wireless technology by March 30, 2025, as “unrealistic.” The government published the country’s draft new policy on the broadband spectrum, which included plans to shut down the 2G network by June 2024, while the shutdown of the 3G network is scheduled for March 30, 2025.

MTN Nigeria Communications Plc (MTN Nigeria) kicked off an open 5G pilot in the lead-up to its highly anticipated commercial launch. The company, which intends to launch 5G services in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Kano, Owerri and Maiduguri, is testing the next-generation network infrastructure. Customers with certain enabled devices will be allowed to connect to and try out the new service where coverage is available.

World Bank Group's private sector, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), announced plans to invest up to US$160 million in Safaricom Telecommunications Ethiopia (STE), to enable the operator to finance its capital expenditures to provide quality telecom services in Ethiopia.
